The World Health Organization
(WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) has issued a notice regarding
the recent Swine Influenza Virus A (H1N1) cases
that have been reported in Mexico as well as the
United States. The potential pandemic effect worldwide
has created a concern for precautionary measures
for people to take to limit the spread of this
virus.
EPA has made a statement
indicating they believe all currently registered
products making influenza A virus claims will
be effective against this H1N1 swine flu strain.
EPA believes,
based on available scientific information, that
the currently registered influenza A virus products
will be effective against the 2009-H1N1 flu strain
and other influenza A virus strains on hard, non-porous
surfaces. For safe and effective use of these
products, always follow the label instructions,
paying special attention to the product’s
dilution rate (if applicable) and contact time.
As the CDC stresses, your first line of defense
is to wash your hands frequently with soap and
water. These registered disinfectant products
are for use on hard, non-porous surfaces, not
the skin.
